What neo-traditional tattoos are
Neo-traditional grew out of American traditional tattooing, the bold-line, limited-palette style of anchors, swallows and roses. It keeps the strong outlines that make a tattoo readable from across a room, but varies the line weight, uses a wider and richer colour palette, and adds shading and decorative detail, often influenced by Art Nouveau.
Popular subjects
Animals and birds, flowers, decorative portraits framed with jewels or ornaments, daggers, lanterns and mythological figures all suit the style. It works well for designs that mix an animal or face with flowers and ornament, and it pairs naturally with colour tattoos and animal tattoos.
Why it lasts
The bold outlines hold the design together as the skin ages, so neo-traditional tattoos stay sharp longer than designs that rely only on fine detail. Medium-to-large placements such as the forearm, upper arm, thigh and calf give the linework room to breathe.
