What new school tattoos are
New school tattooing took off in the 1980s and 1990s, borrowing from cartoons, comics, graffiti and animation. It is recognisable by exaggerated proportions (big heads and eyes, stretched perspectives), thick outlines, bright saturated colour and a sense of humour. Characters, pets drawn as cartoons, gaming and anime-inspired pieces all fit.
Designing a new school piece
Because the style is about personality, we usually start from something personal: your pet, a favourite character, or an object that means something to you. The artist then exaggerates it into a cartoon version. Clear, bold shapes matter more than tiny details, so new school pieces work best at medium size or larger.
How it heals and ages
The heavy outlines and strong colour contrast keep new school tattoos readable for years. As with all colour tattoos, sunscreen on the healed tattoo is the best way to keep the colours bright.
